Monarch of the Glen estate sold for estimated £5.25 million

A Highland estate, where portions of the BBC series Monarch of the Glen was filmed, has been sold for an estimated £5.25 million. The Balavil Estate comprises a Georgian house and 6,800 acres of land near Kingussie. It was built by Scottish architect Robert Adam and has recently become known as “Kilwillie Castle” after the name of the fictitious landowner in the BBC series. It is hoped that the new owner, whose identity has not been revealed, will be able to restore the estate to its former glory and match the degree of restoration neighbouring estates have seen in recent years. The estate has been owned by different generations of the same family since 1790, but the current owners decided it was time to sell up. However, they will not be travelling far, as they have had building permission granted to build a house within the grounds. This will be in addition to the existing eight houses and cottages found on the estate, along with a farm and 600 acres of woodland. Plans for a wind farm to be built between Balavil and a neighbouring estate are currently being considered by the Scottish Government. The list of outdoor sports which can be enjoyed on the Balavil Estate  includes stalking sika, red and roe deer, driven pheasant shooting, driven and walked-up grouse shooting, rough shooting and the opportunity to fish for salmon and trout on 2.7 miles of the River Spey.
